Game Tester Job Opportunities and Openings

Compose your résumé for victory

Prior to beginning to enquire about game tester job opportunities, you’re going to want to confirm your CV is up to date and suitable for the career you are thinking of perusing.

There is a lot of debate on how to create an ideal CV, but here are a few things to think about when preparing a CV specially to be used when enquiring about game tester job opportunities:

If you have an interest in games, speak up! Don’t ramble on about it though. A couple of lines under ”personal interests” is probably enough. Maybe mention your favourite game and give an explanation of why you enjoy playing it.

Give your previous positions. This is official practice when producing a CV, but I’m mentioning it now as if you have no formal experience as a game tester or have not held a job in the technology sector, you’re going to have to be prepared to give details as to why you’re shifting career path.

List any programming or design qualifications you may have, as programmers and designers are likely to be seen as excellent candidates (as they’re likely to be familiar with finding faults). A portfolio is always useful.

How far can you travel?

Sometimes game tester positions will give permission to you to work from home if you have the needed gear, which is an awesome gig if you can get it!

However, a considerable number of positions will require you to be on site for testing, so you need to figure out where you’d be happy to work.

Large towns are likely to have game tester job opportunities within them, so if you live near one you may not have to travel that far to find a job.

However, if you live in the countryside or anywhere without a growing information industry, you may have to travel a fair distance to any place of work, or consider relocating if you are offered a job.

Finding jobs

Now is the fun part; actually locating opportunities to apply to.

There are a number of ways you could look for jobs as a game tester:

Research gaming businesses within the cities you are able to work. Make a list of them, and investigate their websites to see if they have any opportunities available. If they do, apply for positions you meet the criteria for. If not, see if you can find out if they will take covering letters/CVs/résumés anyway.

Scout online job boards, upload your CV/résumé and specify what type of game tester opportunities you are searching for. Set up email alerts for searches that match what jobs you are after.

Getting an interview and the opportunity

Now that you’ve surely found some positions or start-ups to enquire to, it’s time to try and score an interview, and hopefully a job.

Before applying for each job, be sure you review each start-up thoroughly. Make certain you’re not emailing covering letters to companies that mention not to do so!

In your covering letter, summarise why you want to be employed by them specifically. Tell them about the talents you can bring into their business (don’t lie!). Don’t forget to attach your CV and your contact details so they can contact you if they like you!
